BlowsMeAway Productions and Jason Ricci present…
The SM57-JR
Genuine Shure SM57 with internal volume control.
The venerable Shure SM57 has become a very popular harmonica microphone. Successor to the "Paul Butterfield Mic" Shure 545, the SM57 has excellent directional qualities to minimize feedback, and a warm clean tone ideal for feeding to effects pedals. It can still be overdriven to warm distortion by cupping it tightly.

With the help of the marvelous Jason Ricci, BlowsMeAway has developed the SM57-JR. Finally, an SM57 with volume control built-in, bringing control to the discerning harp player. Now you can add a wireless transmitter or impedance matching adapter while keeping the entire system short and lightweight. By adjusting the volume you can experiment with different amp drive levels for tonal variety, and of course, cope with feedback without having to dive for your amp or the PA during performance.

Here is what the lovely and talented Christelle Berthon has to say about her SM57-JR:

The SM57-JR begins as a brand new, guaranteed genuine Shure SM57. BlowsMeAway Productions carefully disassembles the entire mic, performs the modification and reassembles it. Everything that comes along with a new SM57 is included - data sheet, mic clip, mic bag, etc.

The SM57-JR is designed for use with standard low impedance cabling into a PA or impedance matching transformer. It can also be connected to a low impedance wireless transmitter such as the AKG WMS40 or Samson Airline system, just like Jason uses.

Grill Lock Option: When you hold an SM57 in your hands, the floating grill can make some noise, especially noticeable on slow ballads. I can lock the grill down - and have done so on Jason's mic. The Grill Lock option reduces but does not eliminate handling noise. There is no charge for this option, but there is a VERY IMPORTANT caveat. Once it is locked, turning it rotates the actual element. You WILL feel a distinct rubbery resistance to this, and if you simply stop there no damage will be done. If you force it beyond that, even 1/4 turn will break the hair-like wires that lead from the element to the solder lugs you'd see if you unscrewed the cartridge from the base.  This isn't meant to scare you away from this useful option. As long as you know about it and you don't hand your mic to ham-fisted strangers, you should be fine with it.

The standard SM57-JR will not work with “cheater cables” - those cables with an XLR connector at the mic and and a 1/4” plug at the other. It also won’t work with some wireless transmitters, or some computer interface boxes with XLR jacks, because these are actually high impedance inputs. The microphone needs to "see" a true low impedance input. However BlowsMeAway has solutions for most of these situations and can make a custom SM57-JR that will work for you. Simply contact BlowsMeAway for more information.

BlowsMeAway warranties the new SM57-JR on identical terms to the original Shure limited warranty for 2 years from date of purchase. Failure due to over-rotating the element on an SM57-JR with the Grill Lock Option is not covered under warranty.

$179 including brand new mic; $89 to modify customer's donor mic. Contact BlowsMeAway BlowsMeAway to purchase.
